AASU Threatens Mass Movement

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) today threatened tolaunch a mass movement if the Centre-NSCN(I-M) ceasefire extension to Assam wasnot immediately withdrawn.

Condemning the extension of the ceasefire to Assam,AASU president Prabin Boro told newsmen here that no compromise would be madewith the territorial integrity of the state.

The students' organisation announced a three-hoursit-in demonstration in front of the district Deputy Commissioners' officesacross the state on July 7 for withdrawal of the extension to Assam.

If the Centre failed to withdraw it after thedemonstration, Boro said, the AASU, which spearheaded the six- year-longanti-foreigners Assam movement, would take up a mass movement in support of itsdemand.

The North-East Students Organisation, of which the AASUis a member, yesterday met in Shillong and discussed the ceasefire issue and theillegal foreigners problem in the N-E region, Boro said.

All the students unions welcomed the Centre's move forinitiating the peace process and dialogue with the NSCN(I-M), but none of them wereprepared to compromise with territorial integrity for peace in one state.

"Ceasefire and talks should not be restricted toone outfit only. All the militant organisations in the region should beincluded", he added.
