While the first-choice Bangladesh men's cricket team gears up to kickstart its 2023 ODI World Cup campaign against arch-rivals Afghanistan on October 7, another greener, younger Bangladesh side will commence its Hangzhou Asian Games campaign in their quarterfinal match against Malaysia on Wednesday (October 4). The clashing of the 50-over World Cup and Asian Games 2023 meant that Asian cricket giants Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan sent second-string outfits to the Asiad. These teams comprise relatively inexperienced but talented players who are keen to make a mark and represent their country at the prestigious multi-sport event. (ScorecardFull Coverage | Cricket News)

By virtue of their better ICC rankings in the T20 international (T20I) format, the five Asian cricketing giants have been provided direct entry into the quarterfinals of the 2023 Asian Games. While India and Pakistan faced Nepal and Hong Kong, respectively, in the first and second quarterfinals, and Sri Lanka will take on Afghanistan in the third quarterfinal on Wednesday morning, Bangladesh will lock horns with qualifiers Malaysia in the fourth and final last-eight stage match.

This will be the first time that Bangladesh and Malaysia will face each other in a T20I match. This will be of course be Bangladesh's first game at this event, but Malaysia will arrive to Wednesday's match on the back of two comprehensive victories at the competition. Malaysia beat Singapore by 73 runs in their first Group C encounter, and followed it up with a 194-run walloping of Thailand on Monday. It will be interesting to see if Malaysia can carry that form into their quarterfinal, when up against a continental heavyweight.
