January 12, 2024, will signal the commencement of the AFC Asian Cup 2023, with Asian football's flagship international tournament awakening from its four-year slumber to pit the 24 best teams on the continent against each other in its quest to determine a worthy winner. Qatar, hosting the tournament just over a year on from their FIFA World Cup 2022 hosting duties, are also the reigning champions, a status they acquired by beating the cup's most dominant team, Japan, four years ago in the United Arab Emirates. (More Football News)

The AFC Asian Cup began, much like its global counterparts, in the mid-1950s. Korea Republic won the first two editions in 1956 and 1960, while IR Iran became the first national to win three titles in a row. Japan won their first championship in 1992, marking the dawn of a new era in Japanese football, one that has witnessed the Blue Samurai rise to the top of the continental football pyramid. However, their previous triumph was in 2011, more than a decade ago.

Australia joined the Asian Football Confederation in 2011, leaving Oceania behind in search of a more competitive playing field. Four years later, the Socceroos won their first title in Asia, matching Israel, Kuwait, and Iraq's feat. Saudi Arabia, enjoying their own football boom of late, are the tournament's second-most successful side, winning three titles and finishing second thrice.
