The father of a woman allegedly raped by a student at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has firmly denied the claims, asserting that his daughter was injured after falling from an auto-rickshaw.
According to an NDTV report, speaking to reporters on Saturday, he said he received a call at 9:34 pm on Friday informing him that his daughter had lost consciousness following the accident and was admitted to the neurology department of SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where police had taken her for treatment. He stressed that his daughter explicitly told him no sexual assault occurred.
"I have spoken to my daughter. She said no one tortured her or misbehaved with her," the father said. "She is completely fine and has no connection with the man who has been arrested." He noted that police asked his daughter to write a statement at the station as part of a complaint, which she complied with. He also mentioned that during her medical examination, police instructed her to say something, but she did not follow through. When asked if his daughter was in trauma, he responded, "No, she is completely fit." He added that she was sleeping and he planned to speak with her at length after she woke up, explaining that she had gone to the institute to submit a document.
Police Report and Legal Proceedings
According to a police officer quoted by news agency PTI, the woman filed an FIR alleging she was called to the IIM Calcutta boys' hostel for a counselling session. The FIR claims she consumed a drink laced with drugs, lost consciousness, and realised she had been raped upon regaining consciousness. The accused student has been arrested and remanded to police custody until July 19. His lawyer, addressing a Kolkata court, argued that the student is being framed. The lawyer further stated that the woman, described as a counsellor, had connected with the student online and visited the hostel to provide counselling services.
Saibal Chattopadhyay, Director-in-Charge of IIM Calcutta, issued a statement emphasizing the institute's cooperation with law enforcement. He clarified that the complainant is not affiliated with IIM Calcutta and underscored the institute's zero-tolerance policy toward such incidents.
“We’ve been informed of a serious complaint involving one of our students. The complainant is not from the institute,” said Saibal Chattopadhyay. “We’re treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and are fully cooperating with law enforcement.” He added that the institute is committed to due process and to protecting the dignity, safety, and privacy of all involved. “We’re also ensuring that institutional protocols are being followed throughout the investigation,” the statement concluded.
