A retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), identified as Mohammad Shafi, was shot dead by terrorists on Sunday morning while he was praying at a mosque according to Jammu and Kashmir Police. The targeted attack occurred in Gantmulla village of Sheeri in Uri, an area that had remained relatively free from violence and militancy for more than a decade.

The victim has been identified as Mohammad Shafi Mir, who retired as a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) from J&K Police in 2012. He had been a protected person with one security officer deployed with him round-the-clock who was withdrawn recently, according to Indian Express.

Soon after the attack, a joint team of J-K Police and the Indian Army cordoned off the area to trace and arrest the militants involved in the attack.

This follows the events of four Army soldiers being killed by terrorists during an encounter on Thursday, and three civilians killed on Friday after allegedly being taken in for questioning by the Army.
