Aadhaar card is one of the most important documents a person might need  – to open a bank account, to get vaccinated against Covid-19, filing income tax returns etc. Recently, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had put out a tweet on their official Twitter handle and warned people to be diligent and to verify Aadhaar cards before accepting them as proof of identity.

In the tweet, the Aadhaar issuing authority said, “All 12-digit numbers are not Aadhaar. It is recommended that the Aadhaar should be verified before accepting it as identity proof. Click: https://resident.uidai.gov.in/verify and verify it online in 2 simple steps.”

Here’s how you can check if your Aadhaar card is genuine or fake:

-       Visit the official UIDAI portal. Click on "My Aadhaar," and then click on "Verify an Aadhaar number" under "Aadhaar Services."

-       Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number, followed by captcha verification. Then, click on "Proceed to Verify."

-       If the number entered by you is valid, you will be redirected to a new page that will show your Aadhaar card number, along with details such as age, gender and state.

-       After you have completed all of the above steps, you will be redirected to a new page where it will display the details of the Aadhaar card’s validity. It will also tell you if the card was ever issued in the first place. If it was not issued, then you know it is a fake.
