Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Verma, at whose official residence a huge sum of unaccounted cash was recovered recently, was named in a 2018 CBI FIR in a bank fraud case linked to a sugar mill.

According to a report by India Today, the CBI has filed an FIR against Simbhaoli Sugar Mills, its directors, and others, including Yashwant Varma, who was the company's non-executive director at the time.

The case began following a complaint by Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), alleging that the sugar mill had defrauded the bank through a fake loan scheme.

The bank has also alleged that the company misappropriated loans worth Rs 97.85 crore meant for farmers and used the amount for other purposes. By May 2015, Simbhaoli Sugars had already been declared a case of "suspected fraud", and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was reported.

Yashwant Verma, who was the non-executive director of the company, is named in the FIR.

According to reports, in February 2024, a court ordered the CBI to resume the stalled investigation. However, before the case could proceed, the Supreme Court overturned the order, thereby immediately closing the CBI’s preliminary enquiry (PE).

What Was The Case?

On March 14, during the Holi celebration, a fire incident took place. Family members reported the fire; emergency services were called, leading to police involvement. Amid this, a huge amount of unaccounted cash was recovered from Varma's house.

Varma was out of town at the time of the incident.

The recent recovery of huge amounts of cash from the residence of Justice Yashwant Verma has again raised questions about his past financial dealings and his alleged role in the Simbhavali Sugars case.
