Meanwhile, in a controversial move, Pakistan's Senate passed a bill on Friday aimed at ensuring that no parliamentarian faces lifelong disqualification. The opposition has criticized this bill, alleging that it is an attempt to facilitate Nawaz Sharif's return to the country and his participation in the upcoming elections. Sharif had been disqualified in 2017 by a Supreme Court bench and later became ineligible to hold public office for life based on a subsequent court verdict in 2018.
Nawaz Sharif, who served as Pakistan's prime minister for three non-consecutive terms, had been serving a seven-year imprisonment sentence in the Al-Azizia corruption case before leaving for London in 2019 to seek medical treatment.
