The Egypt national football team received a hero's homecoming at El Alamein International Airport in Matrouh Governorate on Friday, July 10, after their historic run at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Thousands of passionate fans gathered, waving flags to celebrate an unprecedented campaign. The Pharaohs captivated the football world by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time in their history. Under head coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt broke decades of waiting to secure their first-ever tournament wins against New Zealand and Australia. Their incredible journey ended with a dramatic Round of 16 defeat to defending champions Argentina. Despite the heartbreak, goals from Mostafa Ziko and the leadership of captain Mohamed Salah cemented the team's legacy. On the back of it, the Egyptian Football Association has already extended Hassan's contract until 2030, and their focus will not shift to continental dominance. The title showdown saw a stirring Centre Court comeback as the second seeds, Marcelo Arevalo and Jeļena Ostapenko, beat the Australian pair of Marc Polmans and Storm Hunter 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in just under two hours. The Aussies were quick off the block, winning the first set and breaking to lead 3-1 in the second. The turning point came when Arevalo calmed a frustrated Ostapenko. The Latvian star then hit powerful shots to win the second set. Officials closed the roof before the final set, which changed the complexion of the game. Under the indoor lights, Ostapenko and Arevalo dominated, securing breaks in the 4th and 8th games. With the win, Arevalo became El Salvador’s first-ever Wimbledon champion, while Ostapenko completed a rare career sweep of Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles -- only the 7th woman in the past 60 years to achieve the feat. Tadej Pogacar produced a tremendous solo ride on the iconic Col du Tourmalet on Thursday to earn a 23rd Tour de France stage victory, reclaim control of the race and sap his rivals’ morale after just six days of racing. Pogacar, who first wore the yellow jersey after winning at Les Angles earlier this week, made the most of the first big mountain trek of this year’s Tour in the Pyrenees to stamp his authority, sending a clear message to his rivals that he remains in a class of his own. The two-time world champion covered the final 43 kilometers (around 27 miles) alone, crossed the Stage 6 finish line 2 minutes, 38 seconds ahead of his main challenger, Jonas Vingegaard, and reclaimed the coveted jersey.

India lurched deeper into a crisis in cricket’s Twenty20 format after slumping to a second straight series loss, with England taking an insurmountable 3-0 lead on the back of destructive half-centuries by Phil Salt and Harry Brook. England won the 4th T20 of the five-match series by nine wickets and with 6.1 overs to spare on Thursday, sealing a first ever bilateral T20 series victory over India. On the back of India’s stunning 2-0 series defeat in Ireland, it’s now five straight losses in completed T20 matches — another unwanted first for T20 world champion India. One of the matches against England was a washout. Brook, the England captain, smashed 79 not out off only 35 balls, with eight fours and four sixes. Opener Salt hit a 42-ball 59 not out. The pair came together at 13-1 after Jos Buttler was caught behind in the third over.

Linda Noskova reached her maiden Grand Slam final with a commanding 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk in just 79 minutes on Centre Court on Thursday, July 9. The ninth seed capitalised on a Kostyuk double fault to take the opening set before breaking early in the second and holding her nerve to close out the match when the Ukrainian's forehand drifted long on match point. The 21-year-old, who had never gone beyond a Grand Slam quarter-final before Wimbledon, will now face compatriot Karolina Muchova in an all-Czech final after the 10th seed defeated Coco Gauff earlier in the day. Fresh off her Berlin Open title, Noskova is now one win away from her maiden Grand Slam crown.

Karolina Muchova produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Coco Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) in a gripping Wimbledon 2026 women's singles semi-final on Thursday, booking her place in a second career Grand Slam final. The Czech recovered after surrendering a 6-3 lead in the deciding tiebreak, saving a match point at 8-9 before holding her nerve to seal victory in a dramatic finish. It was Muchova's second win over Gauff this season after losing their first six meetings and marked the first time she had won a match after saving a match point since the 2023 French Open semi-finals. The victory sets up an all-Czech Wimbledon final against ninth seed Linda Noskova, guaranteeing a first-time Grand Slam champion.

Olav Kooij claimed his maiden Tour de France stage victory after producing a perfectly timed sprint to win Stage 5 from Lannemezan to Pau on Wednesday. Racing for Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, the Dutchman surged clear in a chaotic bunch finish that followed a late crash with just over five kilometres remaining, crossing the line ahead of Germany's Max Kanter and Belgium's Tim Merlier. The flat 158.3-km stage featured French rider Baptiste Veistroffer in an early solo breakaway, but the peloton reeled him in before the sprinters took control. Norway's Torstein Traeen safely finished with the general classification contenders to retain the yellow jersey, preserving his 28-second lead over Sean Quinn heading into the first major mountain test.
