Coco Gauff finally met a player in Paris who could match her court coverage in long baseline rallies. Anastasia Potapova ended Gauff’s French Open title defense in the third round with a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 victory over the American on Saturday. The match was played before mostly empty stands inside Court Philippe-Chatrier as French fans stayed away to watch the Champions League soccer final. Gauff’s second Grand Slam title came with a victory over top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the final at Roland Garros a year ago. The 30th-ranked Potapova, who was born in Russia but now represents Austria, improved to 3-2 in her career against Gauff. She’s having quite a clay season after reaching a final in Linz, Austria, and the semifinals of the Madrid Open as a qualifier.

Aryna Sabalenka stormed past Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5 in their French Open 2026 third‑round clash at Court Suzanne‑Lenglen on Saturday, progressing to the Round of 16. It’s more than just a fashion show for Naomi Osaka at the French Open. The four-time Grand Slam champion has advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time in her career. Osaka beat 18-year-old American opponent Iva Jovic 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-4 over nearly three hours on Saturday, in her 100th Grand Slam match. Once again, Osaka wore a metallic gold bomber jacket over her sequined gold playing dress during her walk-on. But this time her outfit was offset by a tannish-gold colored train that stretched all the way down to the red clay on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

The earth-shaking '12s' might not be out in their full, but expect the Lumen Field to be as noisy as any other stadium when the USA take on Australia in a FIFA World Cup 2026 group match on June 19. Of course, the stadium will be known simply as the Seattle Stadium, to comply with FIFA guidelines, but the soccer fans would still feel its aura. Home to Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) and NFL outfit Seattle Seahawks, with their loyal '12th man', it is one of the most iconic venues in America and boasts an unrivalled fan experience. The Seattle Stadium will host six matches during the World Cup: four in the group stage (Belgium vs Egypt on June 15, Bosnia-Herzegovina vs Qatar on June 24, and Egypt vs Iran on June 26) and one each in the next two rounds.

The 2nd edition of Kypseli Mundial, a football tournament and cultural festival organised by migrant and refugee communities of Athens, was held in the second week of 2026. Amateur players with ties to Albania, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, Sudan, and more competed at Alepotrypa Stadium in Kypseli, a neighbourhood in Athens. It was founded three years ago by Ivorian Moussa Sangare with the hope of using football to combat fear and mistrust toward migrants in Greece. Meanwhile, the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America kicks off on June 12. The build-up has not been smooth, to say the least. Despite being the biggest -- 48 national teams, 104 matches -- it is in danger of being an exclusionary event. It is taking place, Amnesty said, "amidst an acute human rights crisis, with significant risks and impacts for fans, players, journalists, workers, and local communities alike." Three-quarters of the matches will be played in the USA.

Days ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, England winger Anthony Gordon signed a dream five-year contract with FC Barcelona, a deal reportedly worth 80m euros (£69.3m). The 25-year-old Liverpool-born player underwent a medical with La Liga champions on Thursday and was officially presented to the media the following day, May 29. Addressing the gathering at Camp Nou in flawless Spanish, the former Everton and Newcastle United star said that "Barca are the biggest club on the planet. It is stuff I dreamed [about] as a child." He scored 17 goals for Newcastle in all competitions in the 2025-26 season, including 10 in 12 UEFA Champions League games. Hansi Flick's Blaugrana defended the Spanish league title with ease but were eliminated from the UCL by Atletico Madrid in the quarter-final. Gordon will next link up with the England squad for a training camp before the World Cup, which starts on 11 June. England, the 1966 champions, are in Group L, alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama.

Bags of ice and portable fans have become a regular sight at the French Open 2026, the year's second Grand Slam being played at Stade Roland Garros, Paris. On Day 6 of the clay court competition, Novak Djokovic, known for his resilience, relied on ice packs to keep himself cool and calm. The 24-time Major winner lost the third-round match to Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in five grueling sets. Still, images of the Serbian legend submitting to the Paris heat were unmissable. And he was not alone. Earlier, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner was reduced to a heap in his defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina. Like Djokovic, the Italian took a 2-0 lead and was one game away from winning the match (5-1 in the third). Evidently, elements have become the biggest challenge. Fans have also wilted in the high temperatures as an unprecedented heatwave grips western Europe, a result of the so-called "heat dome".
