Lucknow, June 25: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “Congress had committed the sin of imposing the Emergency in order to remain in power. Today, the entire country remembers the dark day of June 25, 1975, when Congress strangled the democracy of the nation. To remain in power and to prevent the implementation of the court's order, Indira Gandhi attempted to snatch away the rights of citizens. This sin of Congress was a direct attack on democracy and the dreams of Baba Saheb. The present generation of Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav has forgotten the whip of Congress and is now practising politics under its shadow.”

The Chief Minister was addressing the 'Loktantra Senani Samman Samaroh', organised in Lucknow on Thursday on the 51st anniversary of the Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. On the occasion, he also honoured the democracy fighters.

CM Yogi stated, "Congress suppressed the voices of political parties supporting democracy, the common people, and everyone associated with the media. What was it that compelled Congress to impose the Emergency? Only one conclusion emerges, which is, Congress committed this sin solely to retain its power, and in order to conceal this sin, it attempted to suppress the voices of the youth, workers of political parties, and social organisations."

The Chief Minister pointed out, "During the emergency, the powers of the judiciary were curtailed. The media was censored. Not only this, but even the Preamble of the Constitution of India was changed in the darkness of the night. This was done by the same Congress whose prince today is misleading the people of the country by carrying a copy of the Constitution in his hand. The present generation should know about this double character. That is why 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' is being observed on June 25 to make the entire country and the younger generation aware of it."

The CM remarked, "The common people and leaders of political parties were suffering under the atrocities of Indira Gandhi. They were being sent to jail for supporting democracy. Today, the present generation of leaders such as Lalu Prasad and the late Mulayam Singh Yadav are seen practising politics under the shadow of the same Congress. Whenever Congress tried to forge an alliance with the Samajwadi Party, Mulayam opposed it. He used to say that, come what may, there should be no alliance with Congress. But his successors are bent upon sinking Mulayam Singh Yadav's legacy as well by boarding the sinking ship of Congress. Even today, these people believe it is their birthright to come together, weaken democracy, promote dynastic politics, and act contrary to constitutional values."

The Chief Minister said, "At the G-20 meeting, Prime Minister Modi stated that India is not only the world's largest democracy but also the world's oldest democracy. India is also the mother of democracy. When the world did not even know about democracy, democracy had already been established in numerous villages and regions of India. It is in India's DNA. The very foundation of democracy is that government schemes are designed for the person standing at the last rung of society.”

He added, “During the COVID pandemic, Prime Minister Modi ensured free vaccines, testing, treatment, and ration facilities for the common people. He made us realise that our ultimate accountability is towards the people. The spirit of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas also reinforces democracy. All the schemes of Modi Ji are dedicated to the common people. Our goal is to ensure that the benefits of these schemes reach every eligible person without discrimination based on caste, faith, religion, region, or language."

The CM stated, "Providing houses to 4 crore poor people, toilets in the homes of 12 crore poor families, cooking gas connections in the homes of 10 crore poor families, free ration to 80 crore people, Ayushman Bharat benefits to 50 crore people, and helping 25 crore people rise above the poverty line – all these achievements demonstrate the strength of India's democracy. On one hand, democracy is being strengthened under the leadership of Modi Ji, while on the other, Congress, which strangled democracy for selfish interests, continues to make similar attempts even today. We all must remain vigilant against this."

The programme was attended by the state's Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna; Bharat Dixit; Gaya Prasad Sonkar; Ram Singh Kushwaha; Vidyaram Verma; Ajay Singh; Omprakash Gupta; a large number of Loktantra Senanis; MLAs; Convenor Brij Bahadur; BJP Regional President Kamlesh Mishra; Mahanagar President Anand Dwivedi; District President Vijay Maurya; and eminent citizens, among others.
