Toyota has launched the eighth-gen Camry in India at Rs 36.95 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India). Unlike its predecessor, which was available as a petrol as well as a hybrid model, the new Camry is available with a hybrid powertrain only. Hence, it has only one true rival in the country, the Honda Accord Hybrid, which is priced at Rs 43.21 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). So, let’s see how the new Camry fares against the Accord on paper.

  • The Accord is longer, wider and taller than the Camry. However, the Toyota takes the lead when it comes to the length of the wheelbase.

Engine

  • The Camry is powered by a higher capacity petrol engine than the Accord. But the Accord gets two electric motors that make more power than Toyota’s single unit.
  • The Camry is the more powerful sedan in terms of total power output.
  • When it comes to torque, where the Camry’s 2.5-litre unit has a better torque output, the Accord’s 135kW motors trumps the Camry’s 88kW unit.
  • Power from the hybrid powertrain is sent to the front wheels via an e-CVT unit in both premium sedans.

Features: Since both of these cars are premium sedans, they are loaded with features.

Safety: Both sedans get ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchors, vehicle stability program, traction control, hill hold assist and rear parking sensors. Over these, the Camry comes with nine airbags and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The Accord gets six airbags, front parking sensors and Honda’s lane watch system.

Infotainment: The Accord gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system while the Camry is equipped with an 8-inch unit. Sadly, the Camry misses out on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while Accord Hybrid gets the must-have smartphone connectivity options. The Camry, however, gets a 9-speaker JBL sound system.

Lights: Both sedans are equipped the auto LED headlamps with LED DRLs and LED fog lamps.

Price: Toyota has priced the Camry at Rs 36.95 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India), which is 6.26 lakh less than the Honda Accord Hybrid (Rs 43.21 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi). On paper, this makes the Camry a better option than the Accord because it is better equipped, more powerful and even more affordable than the Honda.
