The German star has been going through a run of poor form and bad luck. After opting to play in Hamburg rather than acclimate to the Paris conditions, he suffered a second-round exit after losing to Alexandre Muller.
Zverev then suffered a bout of vomiting and fever, and to make matters worse, his plane to Paris was struck by lightning and forced to make an emergency landing.
Any mental blockage from these events will need to be left outside the court, though, as Zverev’s opponent for the day is rising star Learner Tien. The world No. 67 had a breakout year in 2025, defeating fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller at the Australian Open, becoming the youngest man to reach the fourth round in Melbourne since Rafael Nadal in 2005.
The American then followed it up with a quarter-final run in Acapulco, where he stunned Zverev in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-4. He will hope to repeat that trick against a player still chasing his maiden Grand Slam title, making for a terrific contest at Roland-Garros.
