AUS Vs IND, 1st Test, Day 2: Bowlers Help India Fight Back, Take 62-run Lead - Highlights

India were nine for one in their second innings when the stumps were drawn on the second day of the first Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia at Adelaide Oval on Friday. Starting their second innings with 53 runs ahead, India extended their lead to 62 with nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah (0 off 11) calming frayed nerves in the centre after opener Mayank Agarwal (5 off 21) lost his partner Prithvi Shaw (4 off 4). Earlier, the visitors bowled out Australia for 191.  Ravichandran Ashwin (4/55) and Umesh Yadav (3/40) were the top wicket-takers for India. 4:42 PM IST: Mitchell Starc with the new ball. And a single off the first ball as Prithvi Shaw played it behind square. Mayank Agarwal faced the remaining deliveries without scoring.

3:32 PM IST: Tim Paine and Mitchell Starc have added crucial 27 runs in 36 balls for the eighth wicket. In the last ten overs, Australia have scored 41 runs and lost two wickets. They still trail India by 106 runs.

3:18 PM IST: In Auckland, New Zealand defeated Pakistan by five wickets to win the first T20I. Debutant Jacob Duffy, who took 4 for 33, was the hero of the match. Pakistan - 153/9; New Zealand 156/5 (18.5)

3:14 PM IST: Then, India continued to drop catches. Mayank Agarwal put down a relatively easier one at deep to give Aussie skipper Tim Paine a life, and a four as a result, off Jasprit Bumrah in the 55th over. This was the fourth of the innings. 2:32 PM IST: Meanwhile, Cricket Australia on Friday asserted that the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India is not threatened by a fresh COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney even though the situation is being closely monitored.

2:25 PM IST: Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc with three quick wickets, including the prized scalp of Steve Smith, as India took control by reducing Australia to 92 for 5 at Tea. Courtesy Ashwin's figures of 11-3-27-3, India successfully managed to neutralise a poor first innings score of 244 as Australia literally got into a shell during the 48 overs that they faced in the first two sessions. After Jasprit Bumrah (14-7-21-2) removed the two openers in the first session, Ashwin did the star turn in the second session even as Marnus Labuschagne (46 batting, 103 balls) got multiple reprieves during his audacious knock.

12:48 PM IST: Bowling change. Ravichandran Ashwin on with his off spin. A double off the first ball as Marnus Labuschagne played it square. Then Labuschagne almost ran Steve Smith out. Tight call at the non-striker's end off the second ball. Direct hit would have done the job for India.

But Ashwin got his man. Smith caught at first slip by Ajinkya Rahane. Smith made one off 29. AUS - 45/3 (27).

12:31 PM IST: What a charmed life. Prithvi Shaw dropped Marnus Labuschagne off Jasprit Bumrah. Top edge and a sitter at square leg. That happened off the fourth ball of 23rd over. Then, an edge off the last ball falling short, in front of the second slip. AUS - 41/2 (23).

12:27 PM IST: Indian pacers continued to dominate Aussies. Another maiden over as Mohammed Shami kept Steve Smith quiet. AUS - 40/2 (22); IND - 244 All Out

12:12 PM IST: Players are back for the post-dinner session.

11:50 AM IST: Jasprit Bumrah bowled a brilliant opening spell to send back Australia's openers, leaving the hosts tottering at 35 for 2 after their pacers dismissed India for 244. Joe Burns (8 off 41 balls) and Mathew Wade (8 off 51 balls) were prepared to play the tough waiting game till Bumrah (8-5-8-2) bowled fast and full to trap both of them leg before as India ended on the right side of 'Umpires Call' on both occasions. Umesh Yadav (6-4-6-0) and Mohammed Shami (9-0-19-0) also kept things tight although they were a little more on the shorter side during the session compared to Bumrah, who reaped dividends for bowling fuller deliveries.

Marnus Labuschagne (16 batting, 15 balls) lived a charmed life when Wriddhiman Saha, touted as the best wicket-keeper in world, missed a tough but gettable caught behind off Bumrah. Labuschagne was insanely lucky when Bumrah dropped a dolly at fine leg after the batsman had mis-timed a pull shot off Shami. He went into the break with Steve Smith (1 batting, 7 balls) for company.

Dinner break. Marnus Labuschagne (16) and Steve Smith (1) were at the crease.

In the previous over, Bumrah dropped Labuschagne, off Mohammed Shami while going for extravagantly trying a jumping catch. It looked like a simple chance. And the ball popped out of his hands for a four. Labuschagne was on 12.

11:25 AM IST: WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah struck again. This time, Joe Burns (8 off 41). LBW. Again, umpire's call. Just clipping the left stump. Burns' not happy. AUS - 29/2 (17).

Innings Break!

India's tail-enders contributed precious little as the first innings folded at 244. Mitchell Starc (4/53 in 21 overs) and Pat Cummins (3/48 in 21.1 overs) dismissed the last four batsmen for an addition of only 11 runs to the overnight score. In fact, India lost seven wickets for 56 runs starting with Virat Kohli's run-out engineered by a poor judgement call from vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. Ravichandran Ashwin (15) got one to rear up from length as Cummins got his second wicket and India's seventh in the first over of the day. Wriddhiman Saha (9) also didn't trouble the scorers getting out on his overnight tally chasing a wide delivery from Starc. Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah hit a boundary each but that was just a tail-ender's bravado as the innings folded in just 25 balls. If one goes by how pink ball matches at Adelaide have panned out, India have scored at least 75 runs less than what should have been a fighting first innings total. In the end, Kohli's dismissal cost them dearly.

9:57 AM IST: A bouncer and Mohammed Shami's done. India all out for 244, with the last four wickets falling for just 11 runs. IND - 244 (93.1).

9:51 AM IST: But Umesh Yadav (6 off 13) didn't last. Holed out. Well-judged take by Matthew Wade, and fourth for Mitchell Starc. IND - 240/9 (92.2).

8:45 AM IST: Meanwhile, former Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Shukla will once again become the vice-president of BCCI after the members have unanimously decided to elect the veteran Congressman, reports PTI. Shukla had earlier been a vice-president during N Srinivasan's regime and was also a popular chairman of the IPL governing council. Shukla's name has been proposed by DDCA president Rohan Jaitley and seconded by Uttarakhand's Mahim Verma, who had vacated the post earlier this year.

8:32 AM IST: David Warner said he's "devastated" to miss out on the pink-ball fixture of such a "big series". But the Australia opener David Warner is hopeful of playing the Boxing Day Test. The 34-year-old had sustained a groin injury in the second ODI and was subsequently ruled out of the third game in Canberra, the three-game T20 series and the ongoing opening Test.

Virat Kohli reached a new career landmark but was left smarting after being run out. India reached the close on 233-6, with Kohli making his presence felt as he reached 50 in Tests for the 50th time before being denied the chance to push on for what would have been a 28th century. The tourists were 188-3 when Ajinkya Rahane set off for a single but then sent Kohli, who had reached 74, back. It meant he was run out for a second time in his Test career, almost nine years after the previous occurrence – also against Australia in Adelaide. His demise this time clearly rankled and Kohli briefly appeared to give his batting partner a glare of exasperation.

Earlier, Prithvi Shaw was bowled by Mitchell Starc from the second delivery of the day, getting an inside edge into his stumps to give the paceman his 11th wicket in the first over of a Test since the beginning of 2014. Mayank Agarwal was bowled by Pat Cummins, and at 32-2, India were just where Australia wanted them. Kohli helped to steady the innings, as he and Cheteshwar Pujara ground out a 68-run partnership. The skipper then put on 88 with Rahane, and the latter was 41 not out as Kohli trudged off. Rahane added only one more before he was pinned lbw by Starc (2-49), plumb in front of middle stump. As Rahane returned to the dressing room, television cameras showed Kohli shaking his head, with the dismissal before the close of Hanuma Vihari, lbw to Hazlewood, surely doing little to sweeten his mood.

With not much batting to come, the onus will be on Wriddhiman Saha (batting on 9) and Ravichandran Ashwin (15 not out) to take India to the all-important 300-run mark. Both Saha and Ashwin have shown the temperament to handle the second new ball and will have to demonstrate the same application that Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane showed on Thursday.

“For a 300-plus total, it’s important to play well in the first two sessions,” Pujara said to explain his dour batting (43 from 160 deliveries).

“The wicket was fresh, the bowlers were fresh, so you could not play your shots so early... it was important to be patient at that stage.”

Saha's choice in the Playing XI ahead of Rishabh Pant was a clear sign that India backed their specialist players in a match that could define the trend in the four-Test series. A head start will give the Indian team a massive psychological boost because the tourists will be without Kohli, who will be on paternity leave after Adelaide.
