England have been docked two World Test Championship points and fined 10% of their match fees over their slow over-rate in the third Test against India.

Ben Stokes' team are 2-1 up in the five-match series after a nail-biting victory at Lord's, where India drew within 23 runs of victory but were undone by Shoaib Bashir's decisive wicket.

But the match was characterised by a slow over-rate in stifling heat, with just 72.3 of the scheduled 90 overs being bowled on day two.

Officials ruled England were two overs short of their target for that day even when taking stoppages and time allowances into account. Across days three and four, 19 more overs were lost.

On Wednesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed England's penalty, dropping them from second to third in the World Test Championship standings, with Sri Lanka propelled into second behind Australia.

England were previously deducted 22 points due to penalties in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, when they finished fifth in the nine-team table.

Stokes' team have a chance to wrap up a series victory when the fourth Test begins at Old Trafford on July 23.

England's 22-run triumph in the third Test represented their smallest winning margin at Lord's when defending a total, and their tightest margin of victory since a 14-run win over Australia in 2013's Ashes opener.

The previous match at Edgbaston, which India won in dominant fashion, saw a total of 1,692 runs scored by both sides.

That is the ninth-highest amount in Test cricket history, and the most since England claimed a stunning win over Pakistan in Rawalpindi in December 2022 (1,768).

That match also saw India score 1,000 runs in a Test match for the very first time, while it was the first time England had conceded 1,000 runs in the format since 1939 (1,011 versus South Africa).
