Read on to find out our top picks for the best content writing agencies in 2023. We take into account the breadth of their services, customer reviews, pricing, and content quality alongside other considerations such as SEO-friendliness and AI detection.

Best Overall Content Writing Service: FATJOE

Our pick for the overall best content writing service goes to FATJOE.

With an extensive team of copywriters across the UK and the US, FATJOE offers the most reliable and highest quality services across a range of content writing tasks.

Services

FATJOE’s content writing services offer several different styles, broken down into Blog Writing, Website Copywriting, Article Writing, Press Release Writing, and Product Descriptions.

We found that their order forms were thorough but flexible, and additional requests for things like email writing or social media posts were accommodated via a catch-all Website Copywriting option.

Aside from their copywriting services, FATJOE also offer video and design services including a Blog2Video service. This is an excellent addition to any blog writing order for anyone engaging in wider content marketing tactics.

All of their services are designed to be ordered as-and-when you need, so there are no contracts or subscriptions tying you down to a certain amount of orders per month.

Price

Pricing starts from £10 (~$13) for short 250-word articles, with options all the way up to 4,000 words of their Pro tier, which will set you back £320.

This pricing is some of the cheapest we’ve seen from an agency and it’s consistent due to their productized model. This consistency really appeals as working with freelancers or on a project-based model can lead to price fluctuations.

Reviews

FATJOE sit pretty with an average rating of 4.8/5 from 1,295 reviews on ShopperApproved. The quality of their copywriting is often flagged in these positive reviews, along with their excellent customer service.

Of course not all of the reviews are positive, but where issues do arise they look to be resolved quickly via revisions.

Additional Features

Two additional factors caught our eye with FATJOE’s services.

The first was the 100% money-back guarantee for your first order. They do offer unlimited revisions as standard - a rarity, often this is would be an additional tier - but the money-back guarantee really meant there was peace of mind with that first order.

The second was their 100%-human guarantee. AI content creation is a hot topic right now, but it’s clear that anyone purchasing copywriting services would expect them to be created by actual people. Sadly, this isn’t a given with every agency, but FATJOE guarantee 100% human copy.

AI detection is, as we all know, currently unreliable at best, but FATJOE do spotcheck submissions using tools such as Originality AI, and will evidence the full writing process via document edit history if needed.

Best Specialist Content Service: Verblio

Our choice for the best specialist content agency goes to Verblio.

Verblio’s content team is entirely US-based and they pride themselves on the high-level of expertise and experience across their writers.

Services

Verblio offer a range of content-based services running the full gamut of blog posts, website copy, and other typical content marketing copywriting.

Their onboarding process is very thorough, taking into account your particular industry, audience requirements, and more.

Unfortunately the services are subscription-based which does mean you are locked into orders.

Price

Possibly the biggest downfall of Verblio’s otherwise excellent services - the price.

The shortest available length is 300 which costs $48. Unlimited revisions are included, but pricing is set on a monthly plan basis, reducing the ability to be flexible with their services.

Additional options such as content optimization or even a simple royalty-free image are billed as extras, bumping the prices by at least $24 and $12 a piece respectively. This really can spiral quickly with large orders and is a shame to see with an otherwise excellent product.

Reviews

Verblio are rated 4.5/5 from 44 reviews on G2.com.

This is clearly a great score, although the sample size is quite small considering.

Reviews typically mention the high quality of their writing, which is great to see, but some do mention that some of the writers are weaker than others and a bit of filtering is needed to separate the wheat from the chaff.

It’s certainly a positive that you can build out a pool of consistent writers, but the bedding-in process can be a little painful, especially if you’re looking to hit the ground running outsourcing projects at-scale.

Additional Features

Verblio take the pick as the best specialist agency due to one very specific feature here - industry specificity.

Verblio have a selection of industries they specialize in, and if this lines up with your or your client’s needs then this is obviously a massive bonus.

They do also offer a video creation service based on the blog posts they make, but this additional service can again be quite pricey compared to alternatives.

Finally they don’t have any particular guarantees around AI content, though they do offer their own dedicated AI writing service.

This is an interesting hybridization between human writers and mass-produced AI content, though whether it sets minds at rest due to being a separate tier, or raises concerns as you know they do use AI is up to you to decide.

Best Content Writing Marketplaces

Finally we have two picks for content writing marketplaces.

We’ve opted for marketplaces given the fact they’re increasingly popular options for companies that want to forego agency middlemen and clutter.

SEMRush Content Marketplace

Best known for its marketing software SEMRush also offers a content writing marketplace.

As an industry-leading marketing software provider SEMRish knows what is need to create compelling content.

Services

SEMRush’s content marketplace offers seven types of content (six writing and one stock photo service).

Ordering these services is relatively easy as the SMERush marketplace handles all of the ordering process for you.

Writer quality can of course vary across the marketplace but you can build out your team and utilize recurring orders to focus on those you like.

Price

Pricing is quite a bit higher than FATJOE, though cheaper per word than Verblio starting from $45 for a 500-word article. This can be reduced to $40 via a subscription but, of course, that does require tying yourself in to a subscription.

SEMRush do offer a full ebook writing service, starting at $480. While steep it can be rare for content agencies to tackle these longer-form articles.

Reviews

SEMRush’s Content Marketplace is rated 4.6/5 from 10 reviews.

Much like Verblio this is a good score, albeit from a small pool of reviews.

The content quality is well-regarded with the main issue being the pricing and subscription model for the platform.

Additional Features

SEMRush’s main additional feature actual comes with the writers they work with. As a marketing tool creator themselves the company knows how to focus on writers that will provide marketing0quality, SEO-optimized content.

Upwork

Finally, a nod to Upwork.

Given the sheer scale of this freelancing platform the usual breakdown of services and price doesn’t really apply here.

Freelancers on the platform charge whatever they feel is appropriate for their services and while this does mean there is a lot of variation, some gems can be found.

Upwork, understandably, might have a slightly concerning reputation due to some of the freelancers available there, but by no means should this tar all of them.

Quality writers can be found, but it does take a little extra work as the vetting and on-boarding process will need to be handled by you, rather than by the platform as seen with FATJOE, Verblio, or even SEMRush’s Content Marketplace.

Content will continued to be a defining feature of any good marketing or SEO campaign moving forward as Google renews its commitment to promote only high-quality content using its E-E-A-T principles and continual algorithm improvements.

Any business seeking to keep up will have to invest in quality content and one of the best ways to do so is to outsource your content writing to the best content writing services available.
