Concerned by the pro-cow moves being made by Congress chief ministers, particularly MP’s Digvijay Singh, the central government is trying to come up with a move to ban cow slaughter across the country. On July 30, the department of animal husbandry got the okay from the law ministry to put up a note to the Union cabinet for amending the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, to bring cow slaughter into its ambit. It’s learnt that the BJP wants to introduce the amendment in the monsoon session because the Congress will stand exposed—it, along with most of the Opposition, is unlikely to vote for it.
