Jamakha Bai married the congenitally blind Pandu Rathod. Of their three children—Prabhu, Tukaram and Dashrath—the last son has sight, but lives separately with his family. Prabhu’s two children and Tukaram’s three are blind. A young relative, Menaka Bai—blind, deaf and dumb—has also joined the family. For the last few months, Jamakha has been sending her four grandchildren to a blind school set up by the Manik Prabhu Shikshan Samsthan. The government has done nothing. The nine were not even counted in the district survey of handicaps. The local MLA, Merajudin Patel, a minister in the government, is in the dark about this family.
