Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed is the vice-president of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA, or the Alliance for Joint Action), which performed spectacularly to emerge third in the election to the National Assembly and command majority in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Balochistan assemblies. While playing a key role in government formation, Qazi Hussain Ahmed took out time to talk to Amir Mir. Excerpts:
MMA president Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani has declared that the Alliance would change the pro-US foreign policy of the Pervez Musharraf regime. Don't you think it could spell chaos for Pakistan?
Will the MMA impose a hardline, Taliban-type administration?
What about the MMA's position on the presence of US troops on Pakistani soil?
What about the concerns the US and India have displayed over the victory of religious forces in the polls?
Federal law minister Khalid Ranjha has said the newly elected members of Parliament will have to take oath under the amended Constitution. Are you ready to do so?
The MMA election manifesto states that once given power, the Alliance would implement Shariat in the country. Do you have any such plans in nwfp and Balochistan where the MMA is to form the government?
What if the Musharraf regime decides to keep the MMA away from the corridors of power?
What are the Alliance's chances of forming a coalition government at the Centre, either with the Pakistan People's Party or the government-sponsored PML(Q)?
