Arumita Mitra is 28 years old and has gained recognition as one of the prominent dynamic social entrepreneurs of her generation. With a clear sense of purpose and a resilient mind, she has worked on achieving a meaningful purpose—creating real, lasting change in the lives of people.
Born and raised in Kolkata, Arumita’s journey into social work began early. At 17, while still in school , she started teaching children in the local slums, focused on girl child education and mental health awareness. It began as a few hours a week but turned into her life’s mission. An alumnus of Jadavpur University, one of the prestigious university in India, she has been an activist from her university days, giving leadership to national movements that talked about social justice and women empowerment.
At 26, Arumita founded her own non-profit organization Sudhamta Foundation India, which aimed at empowering adolescent girls in rural India through education, life skills, and mental health support. In two years, Sudhamta Foundation India helped more than a million girls across ten states, conducting menstrual hygiene workshops, distributing educational aids in villages, and training local women as community mentors. Led by Arumita, a social entrepreneur focused on nation-building through infrastructural development, the initiative works on building roads in villages under the PMGSY scheme. By entering traditionally male-dominated fields like civil construction and adopting villages, she is contributing to improving local conditions.
Arumita is also helping change the condition of private chatters in India by heading Artemis Group of Companies. Under her leadership Artemis Group has expanded its fleet and embraced sustainable aviation practices. She has gained a reputation in India for delivering seamless, personalised charter solutions for VIPs, executives, politicians and global travellers. The conglomerate has its imprints on international real estate, construction of roadways, large scale music concerts, supply chain management, heavy engineering constructions and are about to set a bio-chemical plant near Kolkata. Passionate about doing social work, she rescues acid attacks survivors, and train them to join her industry. She actively mentors aspiring female professionals and advocates for greater diversity in the industry. Drawing on experience, planning, and consistent effort, the Artemis Group has been contributing to advancements in India’s infrastructural development.
Arumita has also led a nationwide menstrual hygiene campaign, “End Period Poverty”, breaking taboos and distributing over a million sanitary pads in underserved areas. She also collaborated with mental health professionals to start a free counselling helpline during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has supported more than 15,000 young individuals to date by distributing food. She runs a nationwide campaign on “Feed India A Meal” to feed one nutritious meal to street dwellers.
Recognized for her work, Arumita has been awarded the Bharat Gaurav Ratna Award for her social contribution pan India and have been featured in Business Mint’s India’s “30 Under 30” industry expert list. Despite increased public attention, she stays connected to the grassroots—regularly visiting remote villages, listening to local women’s experiences, and personally participating in distribution drives and community meals.
When asked what keeps her going, Arumita says, “Change doesn’t need age or authority—it just needs intention. If you can change one life, you’ve already changed the world. I have started to go against the flow by leaving a lucrative job in USA and join social developmental sector and do something for the needy and underprivileged. When society told me that it is not wise to join such a sector that needs severe hard work and get hands dirty, rather choose a comfortable life, I chose the road not taken and that made all the difference.”
Arumita Mitra reflects how dedication, persistence, and empathy can lead to meaningful contributions—regardless of age. While many her age are still exploring their paths, she has gained recognition for a visible impact on society and serves as a motivation to do better for them.
