When Archita Agarwal returned to India after studying pastry and chocolate in France, she wasn't carrying a business plan or a factory blueprint.
She came back with a chocolate melter, a heat gun, a handful of moulds and the techniques she had learnt at ENSP – Ducasse Education and Bellouet Conseil, Paris. More importantly, she returned with a conviction that India deserved a luxury chocolate brand built on quality and authenticity rather than mass production.
In 2016, those tools and that conviction became The Cacao Pods, a Delhi-based luxury chocolate and dessert house built on a simple belief: every meaningful celebration deserves exceptional taste.
"Chocolate has always been associated with moments of joy, togetherness and comfort," says Agarwal. "We wanted to elevate those moments into experiences people would remember."
What began as a small, bootstrapped venture is growing into an independently built luxury brand. Over time, The Cacao Pods has become the preferred choice of India's leading business families and global luxury brands.
At a time when the Indian chocolate market was largely dominated by mass-produced confectionery and imported gifting, The Cacao Pods chose a different path. Instead of competing on volume, it focused on handcrafted bonbons, premium couverture chocolate, seasonal collections and personalised gifting experiences. Staying true to its French roots, the brand sources many of its key ingredients, such as cream, butter and sea salt, from overseas. The vision has always been to create an authentic chocolate experience, crafted proudly in India.
For Agarwal, chocolate was never meant to be just another dessert.
"It is usually the first thing people think of when they want to congratulate someone, celebrate an occasion or express gratitude. We wanted to create chocolates that would naturally fit those emotions."
While European craftsmanship forms the technical foundation of the brand, every collection is designed for the way India celebrates. From weddings and birth announcements to festivals, corporate gifting and private labels, The Cacao Pods operates at the intersection of chocolate, dessert catering and celebrations.
Every detail, whether it's the texture of the ribbon, the weight of the box or the flavour card tucked inside, has been refined through months of thought. The idea is simple: before someone tastes the chocolate, they should already feel that they are opening something exquisite.
Like every entrepreneurial journey, the company's path has not been without setbacks.
The Cacao Pods experienced a four-year pause that became a period of reflection rather than retreat. The break allowed the company to redefine its identity, sharpen its positioning and return with renewed focus.
The renewed focus is on scaling exceptional chocolate and dessert production while remaining rooted in preservative-free recipes, premium ingredients and classical European techniques.
According to Agarwal, "The Indian consumer has evolved. More people today understand the difference between compound chocolate and couverture. They often ask where cacao comes from, how the products are made and what goes into them. Luxury is no longer defined only by an imported label and is increasingly becoming about transparency and freshness."
For The Cacao Pods, this changing landscape presents an opportunity to redefine Indian luxury chocolate. As India's appetite for premium, design-led brands grows, the company is building a luxury chocolate house crafted in India, for India, and eventually, for the world.
Because The Cacao Pods believes its true business is not chocolate.
Its true business is spreading happiness.
