England fast bowler Brydon Carse has found himself at the centre of an off-field controversy after footage emerged showing him in handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby. The incident, which reportedly took place on Saturday night, has prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to launch an investigation, with England captain Ben Stokes also seen near the scene.
Carse was reportedly out celebrating Durham’s emphatic 338-run County Championship victory over Derbyshire. The England pacer had been released to play for his county after remaining unused during England’s first Test against Pakistan. Matthew Potts was also understood to have been present during the celebrations.
Video Shows Carse In Handcuffs
The incident came to light after a video circulated on social media showing Carse surrounded by police officers and being led away in handcuffs. Reports said the 31-year-old was briefly detained following an incident outside the Derby venue, although the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Importantly, Carse was reportedly not arrested and was released without charge. However, the footage has raised fresh questions about off-field discipline within English cricket, particularly with the fast bowler part of the squad for the upcoming second Test against Pakistan.
ECB Confirms Investigation
The ECB acknowledged the reported incident and confirmed that it is looking into the matter. “We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating. The board has not yet provided further details about what happened or indicated whether Carse could face disciplinary action. His availability for the second Test also remains a subject of interest as the investigation continues.
Ben Stokes Was Also Present
While Stokes was visible near the scene in the footage of Carse being detained, there is no indication that the former England captain was directly involved in the incident. Matthew Potts was also reportedly present. However, the episode has inevitably drawn comparisons with Stokes’ own troubled history involving late-night incidents.
Most notably, Stokes was arrested following a fight outside a nightclub in Bristol in September 2017. The incident led to him missing England matches and facing an ECB disciplinary process, although he was later found not guilty of affray in court. The ECB subsequently imposed sanctions, including an eight-match ban that was deemed to have already been served and a £30,000 fine after disciplinary proceedings.
Interestingly, Stokes was also involved in another nightclub-related controversy earlier in 2026, when he and Gus Atkinson were present at a London nightclub after the first Test against New Zealand. The ECB found that Stokes had breached certain contractual conduct obligations and issued him a written warning, although it concluded that he was not involved in the altercation or any violent conduct.
