For nearly 24 years, the School of Allied Health Sciences, a proud constituent of Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (Deemed to be University), has been a transformative force in healthcare education in India. Established under the visionary leadership of its Founder Chancellor, Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram, the institution was built on a noble mission — to empower youth, particularly from rural and underserved backgrounds, through access to quality professional education in the medical sciences.
What began as a modest initiative with just two programmes and 20 students on a single campus has today evolved into a thriving academic ecosystem spread across four campuses in Salem, Chennai, and Puducherry. Over the years, the School has grown in both scale and reputation, now catering to nearly 5,000 students annually. It offers 13 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes carefully designed to align with the rapidly advancing and technology-driven landscape of modern healthcare.
The academic spectrum encompasses a wide range of specialized healthcare disciplines, including Anesthesia Technology, Cardiac Technology, Perfusion Technology, Renal Dialysis Technology, Operation Theatre Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Accident & Emergency Care Technology, Optometry, Physician Assistant, Radiology & Imaging Technology, Respiratory Care Therapy, Neuroscience Technology, Forensic Science Technology, and Public Health. These programmes are structured to blend strong theoretical foundations with intensive practical training, producing highly competent allied health professionals who play a critical and indispensable role in patient care, diagnostics, therapeutic support, rehabilitation, and emergency medical services. In today’s multidisciplinary healthcare system, allied health professionals serve as the backbone that supports physicians and nurses, ensuring efficient, accessible, and quality-driven patient outcomes.
The institution’s consistent growth and academic excellence have been nurtured under the guidance of Honourable Chancellor Dr. A. S. Ganesan and Vice President Dr. Mrs. Anuradha Ganesan of VMRF-DU. Their strategic vision has strengthened institutional governance, infrastructure expansion, and global academic outlook. Under the dynamic leadership of Founder Principal and currently the Dean, Prof. Dr. B. Sendilkumar, the School has achieved remarkable milestones in quality assurance, research engagement, and industry integration.
One of the institution’s most significant accomplishments is securing an ‘A’ Grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), underscoring its commitment to excellence in teaching-learning processes, research initiatives, infrastructure development, and student support systems. Further elevating its national standing, the School holds the distinction of being India’s first educational institution certified under the ISO 21001:2018 Educational Organization Management System (EOMS). This certification, evaluated by TÜV SÜD and recognized by the Quality Council of India (QCI), reflects adherence to globally benchmarked management practices focused on learner satisfaction and institutional effectiveness.
Infrastructure and academic facilities have been developed to meet contemporary healthcare training standards. The campuses feature digitally enabled smart classrooms, a comprehensive high-tech digital library with access to national and international journals, and advanced simulation laboratories that replicate real-world clinical environments. These facilities ensure that students gain hands-on experience before entering hospital settings, enhancing clinical confidence and competence. In addition, the School integrates certification courses, soft skills training, personality development modules, and additional language programmes to prepare students for diverse healthcare environments, both nationally and internationally.
The institution maintains strong linkages with leading multi-specialty hospitals and healthcare organizations, facilitating structured internships and clinical postings. These opportunities provide not only professional exposure but also financial support to students through stipends in select cases. The robust placement ecosystem is evident from campus recruitment drives featuring nearly 20 reputed healthcare institutions and medical coding organizations in the previous year alone. Graduates consistently secure positions in hospitals, diagnostic centres, rehabilitation units, research laboratories, and healthcare IT sectors across India and abroad.
Committed to inclusive and equitable education, the School extends financial assistance through the Annapoorani Educational Scholarship and the Dr. A. S. Shanmugasundaram Scholarship. It also actively facilitates access to government-supported schemes such as Pudhumai Penn and Tamil Pudhalvan, ensuring that deserving students from economically challenged backgrounds are not deprived of professional education. This inclusive approach reinforces the founding vision of social empowerment through education.
Beyond academics, the institution fosters holistic development. Students actively participate in sports competitions, cultural festivals, community engagement programmes, and leadership initiatives through NSS, NCC, and various youth forums. These platforms nurture teamwork, discipline, social responsibility, and civic awareness. Notably, a student brought international acclaim to the institution by earning a place in the Guinness World Records for creating the smallest innovative washing machine, reflecting the culture of creativity and innovation encouraged on campus.
Over the years, the School has received numerous awards and recognitions for excellence in placement, innovation, industry collaboration, and social impact. These accolades include honors such as ‘Best Placement Institute in South India,’ ‘Innovation in Higher Education and Skills Enhancement,’ ‘Best Allied Health Sciences Institute in Tamil Nadu,’ ‘Excellence in Student Placement,’ and ‘Diamond Band in India for Employability and Startup Ecosystem Excellence.’ Additional recognitions such as ‘Institutions with Innovative Infrastructure & Learning Environment,’ ‘Best CSR Initiatives,’ ‘Excellence in Industry-Academic Collaboration,’ ‘Overall Excellence in Higher Education,’ and the ‘Katral Awards’ further validate the institution’s commitment to quality and societal contribution.
A defining strength of the School is its vibrant and expansive alumni network, comprising thousands of allied health professionals serving in leading hospitals, diagnostic centres, research institutions, and healthcare organizations across India and abroad. With active alumni chapters established in the UAE, the institution’s global footprint continues to expand. Many alumni occupy key clinical, academic, research, and administrative leadership roles, contributing meaningfully to healthcare systems and mentoring the next generation of professionals. Their achievements stand as a testament to the institution’s enduring academic impact and professional relevance.
As the healthcare sector continues to evolve with advancements in technology, digital health, and interdisciplinary care, the School of Allied Health Sciences remains committed to innovation, quality enhancement, and global standards in education. Guided by its founding principles and strengthened by visionary leadership, the institution continues to fulfill its mission — delivering transformative healthcare education, empowering students with skills and values, and contributing significantly to strengthening the nation’s healthcare workforce.
