We all know how important a restful night's sleep is for our well-being. But conditions like acid reflux can often disrupt that.

Firstly, it is important to understand that what is acid reflux?

Acid Reflux, also known as GERD, occurs when stomach acid flows back into the food pipe, causing an uncomfortable burning sensation. This can affect your sleep and the discomfort can keep you awake at night. According to clinical data, four in five patients with night time heart burn issues report disturbed sleep. Beyond just heartburn, a person may also wake up from sleep due to coughing and choking or with severe chest discomfort.

Apart from the immediate symptoms, GERD damages the lining of the food pipe and increases a person's risk of developing cancer.

Now the question arises, why are the symptoms of acid reflex worse after lying down or going to bed?

Gravity helps in keeping down stomach acids. When a person lies down for sleeping, gravity is not able to control the acid flow, making it easier for reflux to happen. Similarly, while sleeping, there is reduction in saliva production and swallowing process leading to the leakage of stomach acid into the food pipe and allowing the acid to remain in place for longer.

How to manage acid reflux for a better night's sleep?

  • Dinner Timing: "First, watch your dinner timing. Try to finish your last meal at least 2-3 hours before bedtime to allow your stomach to digest food properly."
  • Sleeping Position: "Elevate your upper body slightly while sleeping. A wedge pillow or raising the head of your bed can help keep acid down."
  • Dietary Choices: "Be mindful of what you eat. Avoid spicy, acidic, and fatty foods. Opt for smaller, more frequent meals."
  • Say No to Late-Night Snacking: "Late-night snacks can be a culprit. Avoid eating close to bedtime."
  • Stay Hydrated, but Not Too Much: "Stay hydrated throughout the day, but limit fluids before bedtime to avoid night-time awakenings."
