Tamil film releases face uncertainty amid an eight-week OTT window dispute.
Producers announce a halt affecting September Tamil film releases.
Sardar 2 is among four September films facing release uncertainty.
Two major producers’ bodies have announced a major disruption to Tamil film releases, escalating an ongoing dispute between producers, distributors and theatre owners over the theatrical-to-OTT release window. The move could affect several highly anticipated films lined up for the coming weeks.
Tamil Film Releases Put On Hold Amid OTT Dispute
The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association jointly announced that no new Tamil films will be released in theatres from September. The decision followed an announcement by the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and Distributors Association that only films carrying a written commitment for an eight-week theatrical window would be screened.
The producers' bodies said the decision had been taken without consultation with them or other industry associations. It was also stated that theatres and distributors had decided against providing advance payments for upcoming films.
The producers maintained that unilateral decisions affecting filmmakers could not be accepted. They also announced that shooting and post-production work on Tamil films would be halted as the dispute continues.
Sardar 2 And Other Tamil Films Could Be Affected
The first half of September already has several Tamil releases scheduled. Karthi's Sardar 2, directed by PS Mithran, is among the biggest titles facing uncertainty. G.V. Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar's Immortal, Soori and Suhas' Mandaadi and Demonte Colony 3, starring Arulnithi and Priya Bhavani Shankar, are also expected to be affected.
The producers' bodies have appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to intervene, citing the dispute's impact on thousands of workers in the industry.
The halt is set to begin on September 1, potentially leaving major 2026 releases, including Rajinikanth's Jailer 2, Dhanush's Om, Vijay Sethupathi's Bathha, and Jason Sanjay’s Sigma, facing an uncertain theatrical landscape.
