Kumara Strikes As Rahul Throws It Away. Just when India looked to be settling in, Lahiru Kumara has provided Sri Lanka with the breakthrough. KL Rahul, who had been watchful until then, went chasing a short and wide delivery and only managed an outside edge to Niroshan Dickwella. Rahul departs for 18 off 33 balls, leaving Devdutt Padikkal to join Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease.

Padikkal Gets Another Life As Jaiswal Finds The Boundary. Devdutt Padikkal is certainly riding his luck in Colombo. The left-hander has been dropped again, this time at slip after a thick edge flew straight to the fielder. Asitha Fernando Strikes Back To Remove Jaiswal. Just when Yashasvi Jaiswal looked set for a big score, Asitha Fernando has had the final say. After Jaiswal hammered boundaries earlier in the over to race to 45, the Sri Lankan pacer came back strongly with a delivery that curved back in. Jaiswal attempted to punch it through the off-side but got a thick inside edge, which crashed onto the stumps. He departs for a fluent 45 off 53 balls.

That brings an evenly contested first session to an end in Colombo. India lost KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal after a steady start, while Devdutt Padikkal survived a couple of early scares. Shubman Gill and Padikkal have since settled in and taken India to 88/2 after 25 overs. Gill And Padikkal Keep India Steady. India’s rebuilding job continues nicely in Colombo as Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal edge closer to their half-centuries. The pair have shown patience against the Sri Lankan attack and kept the scoreboard moving after the early setbacks. India move to 142/2 after 40 overs, with Gill unbeaten on 40 and Padikkal on 38.

Fifty For Shubman Gill! Shubman Gill brings up a composed half-century as India’s rebuilding effort continues in Colombo. The skipper reaches his fifty off 101 balls, showing plenty of patience after walking in following the early wickets. Devdutt Padikkal has also played a fine hand at the other end, moving to 61, as the pair take India to 184/2 after 50 overs.

Just when India looked set to head into the break without further damage, Asitha Fernando struck again. Shubman Gill, fresh off his half-century, fell for 50 off 108 balls, edging a loose shot outside off to Niroshan Dickwella. The wicket ends a fine partnership with Devdutt Padikkal and gives Sri Lanka a timely breakthrough.

India go into tea at 187/3 after 52 overs, with Padikkal unbeaten on 63 and Rishabh Pant yet to get off the mark.

Asitha Fernando delivers a back of a length ball outside off, which is neatly steered through backward point for a single by Rishabh Pant. With that crucial run, India officially crosses the 200-run mark in the post-tea session.
