2024 Oscar Shortlists In 10 Categories Announced: Malayalam Hit ‘2018' Out Of Race, 'Barbie' Leads The Way

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the 2024 Oscar annual shortlists across ten categories on December 21. Fifteen movies each are competing for Original Score, Original Song, Animated Short Film, Live-Action Short Film, International Feature, Documentary Short Subject, and Documentary Feature. Meanwhile, ten movies will be competing against each other in the categories of Sound, Visual Effects and Makeup & Hairstyling.

These shortlists do have a knack of surprising you. Since the leak of 20 semi-finalists in the Visual Effects category, for example, presumably led by 'Oppenheimer,' didn’t make the cut. Similarly, the Malayalam hit '2018' was India's official entry in the Best International Film Feature, but now that is also out of the race. 

As expected, 'Barbie' leads the way with five shortlists. 'Killers of the Flower Moon' and the Spanish film 'Society of the Snow' are right behind with four each. Numerous films -- 'Oppenheimer,' 'The Color Purple,' 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,' 'Poor Things,' 'Napoleon' and 'American Symphony' -- are tied with three nods each.

The final nominations out of the above for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23. ABC will air the Oscar Ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, live from the Dolby Theater on March 10, 2024.
