World Environment Day – United Breweries Ltd Initiatives

“Water is a shared resource and protecting it requires collective action. At UBL, water stewardship is central to our Brew a Better India strategy. We are focused on improving water efficiency across our operations while working closely with communities and partners to replenish water in water stressed regions. Our initiatives have helped restore and develop 87 water structures and positively impact more than 12,300 lives, contributing to stronger and more sustainable water systems. On World Environment Day, we celebrate the power of partnerships and community action in building long term water resilience.”

Water is fundamental to brewing and to the communities where breweries operate. At United Breweries Limited (UBL), responsible water stewardship is central to ensuring both business continuity and the long-term resilience of local water ecosystems. As climate change, population growth and increasing pressure on freshwater resources continue to affect water availability, particularly in water-stressed regions, building resilience through responsible water stewardship has become increasingly critical.

Water stewardship forms a key part of UBL’s ambition 'Towards healthy watersheds and nature' under its Brew a Better India 2030 sustainability strategy, aligned with HEINEKEN’s global Brew a Better World strategy. As part of this ambition, the company is focused on improving water efficiency across its operations while strengthening water resilience in the communities where it operates. UBL aims to reduce its average water usage to 2.6 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of beer (hl/hl) in water-stressed areas and 2.9 hl/hl in other areas by 2030, while also working towards fully balancing the water used in its products in water-stressed areas by 2030 through community initiatives.

To advance these goals, UBL works with communities and local partners to implement watershed restoration measures such as rejuvenating water bodies, strengthening groundwater recharge, and improving rainwater harvesting infrastructure. Alongside these efforts, the company also enables access to safe and reliable water for vulnerable communities. A strong emphasis is placed on community ownership and long-term sustainability. Local community groups are supported through training and capacity-building programmes to manage the operation and maintenance of water assets, helping ensure that these interventions continue to deliver benefits over time.

Between April 2025 and February 2026, UBL’s water stewardship initiatives have been implemented across six states where the company operates, including Rajasthan, Telangana, Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Through these initiatives, the company has restored and developed 87 water structures, positively impacting more than 12,300 lives, while 15 community bodies have been formed to support the long-term sustainability and management of these interventions.

UBL reaffirms its focus on strengthening water resilience in water-stressed regions through community partnerships and watershed restoration initiatives. These efforts form an integral part of the company’s Brew a Better India 2030 strategy, which aims to build healthier watersheds and support long-term water security in the communities where UBL operates.
