Congress President Sonia Gandhi evokedlaughter at the joint meeting of Asia Society and the Council of ForeignRelations when she humourously remarked India could offer the U.S. electoraltechnology, consultancy on managing power cuts and dealing with defections.

Addressing the gathering yesterday, Sonia saidduring the recent Presidential elections in the U.S., many Indians felt thatIndia should offer electoral technology.

She was referring to the counts and recountsin Florida where markings on ballot papers were challenged and rechallengedleading to delay in the announcement of results for several days.

Referring to power cuts in California becauseof energy shortage, Gandhi said India could offer consultancy on that.

"We also have great expertise in dealingwith what we call defections and what you call shifting politicalalignments," she said in an obvious reference to the resignation of a Senatorfrom Republican party to become Independent, which resulted in Democrats takingcontrol of the House.
