A State Bank of India ATM in South Delhi has dispensed fake notes of Rs 2,000, which are courtesy ‘Children’s Bank Of India’ instead of the RBI and are replete with other such ‘errors’.

A report in The Hindustan Times says that the fake notes, which can be passed off as real ones at first glance, throw up hilarious substitutes in note-syntax.

The newspaper says the notes are ‘Guaranteed by the Children’s Government’ instead of the Central government and says ‘Churan lable’ where the latent image should be. A fake ‘PK’ logo also replaces the bank’s seal, the report adds.

The notes were said to be withdrawn by Rohit, a customer-care executive who reached the SBI ATM on the night of February 6 to withdraw Rs 8,000. What he got instead were probably notes from a recent edition of Monopoly and he knew something was fishy when the notes promised to ‘pay the bearer two thousand coupens’. He is then said to have brought the matter to the police’s notice.

The police confirmed to the newspaper that such an incident happened and that “We sent a sub-inspector to verify the allegations. He withdrew one Rs 2,000 note and that also turned out to be fake”. They added however that the other notes in the bundle were genuine.

New Rs 2000 notes were introduced after Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes were demonetized on November 8, sucking out 86 percent of the currency from the system. The printing presses and the banks have been under tremendous pressure to churn out new currency notes and replace the old notes. The rush had forced banks to dispense notes without the image of Gandhi to a farmer in Madhya Pradesh.
