The Uttar Pradesh police have registered an FIR after the tourism department received an e-mail threatening to blow up the Taj Mahal with RDX, PTI reported.

An e-mail received on Saturday claimed that RDX and IEDs had been planted inside the Taj Mahal, following which a thorough search was carried out at the 17th century marble mausoleum.

ACP Syed Areeb Ahmed, in-charge of Taj security, confirmed receiving the threatening mail and said, "A search operation was carried out in the Taj Mahal premises without disturbing the tourists. An FIR has been registered in this regard at the local cyber crime police station."

"Similar threat mails were received in Kerala. We are contacting Kerala Police on this matter. Initial probe suggests that the e-mail was sent using a virtual private network," he added.
