Every fishing season, close to a hundred fishermen from Gujarat are picked up by Pakistan’s coast guards for straying into that country’s waters. Now, in an effort to check this, the Gujarat government plans to equip fishing trawlers with GPS. Under the Gujarat Fisheries Act, 2003, the government proposes to give a 50 per cent subsidy to fishermen installing GPS on their boats. The GPS will tell fishermen their exact location, making sure they don’t stray into Pakistani waters. Indian fishermen would face action if they strayed into foreign waters, after this law.
