The state government is considering introducing small car taxis on the city’s roads in a phased manner. The plan is to replace three-wheeler scooter rickshaws (TSRS) with these vehicles on main link roads and on the airport-city route. Talks have started with Maruti, Hyundai and Tata to examine the feasibility of the project. Officials say the idea is to introduce a cheap fuel-efficient car which TSR owners and drivers could switch over to. The authorities feel that with the new fast track roads coming up in the capital and its satellite towns, slow-moving TSRS may be redundant in the coming years. So even as travel becomes more expensive, it will be comfortable and safe.
