With intelligence agencies issuing warnings that airports could be terrorist targets, the CISF has decided to instal state-of-the-art explosive detection systems at all the 54 airports it guards by 2006-end. This includes metro ones like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta. The CISF has already got clearance to import Automatic Explosive Detection Systems and Explosive Tracer Detection Systems. The hand-held metal detectors used now will be replaced by ultra-sensitive ones. The security systems are likely to cost over Rs 300 crore. The process gained urgency in the wake of the Mumbai serial blasts.
