November4, 1979 : US Embassy Iran Hostage Crisis
66 Americandiplomats held hostage. A US rescue effort fails on 25 April 1980 killing eightAmericans and injuring five.The crisis continues until 20 January 1981 when thehostages are released by diplomatic means.

October 23, 1983:300 Killed
Simultaneous suicide truck bombs on American and French compounds in Beirut,Lebanon. A 12,000 lb bomb destroys a US Marine Corps base killing two hundredand forty one Americans; another fifty eight Frenchmen are killed when a 400 lbdevice destroys one of their bases. Islamic Jihad claims responsibility.US and French aircraft strike suspected terrorist bases in the Baka'a valley inretaliation.

June23 , 1985:329 killed
Air IndiaBoeing 747 is destroyed by a bomb over the Atlantic. Sikh terrorists, are blamedfor the attack. Two cargo handlers killed at Tokyo airport when another Sikhbomb explodes in an Air Canada aircraft en-route to India.

December21 , 1988:259 killed
Pan AmBoeing 747 blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland. Attributed to a number of MiddleEastern terrorist groups. Two Libyan intelligence operatives were tried inconnection with this attack. One was convicted in February 2001 in a trial inthe Hague, the other set free.

SEPT.19, 1989:  171 killed
A FrenchU.T.A. DC-10 flying from Brazzaville, the Congo Republic, to Paris exploded overNiger. The Lebanese Islamic Holy War claimed responsibility. Franceaccused Libya.

April19 , 1995168 killed
Federal Building in Oklahoma City, United States, totally destroyed bymassive truck bomb. Rightwing extremists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nicholson arrestedfor the largest terrorist attack in modern American history.

August 7, 1998: 257 killed
US Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar-es-Salem, Tanzania, heavily damagedby massive bomb attacks. In the Nairobi attack 247 people were killed, including12 Americans, and 4,000 injured. Ten people were killed and 74 injured inTanzania incident.  Osama bin Ladenblamed.

Aug 10, 2001: 152 killed
A passenger train was attacked by UNITA rebels south of Luanda, Angola, one ofthe bloodiest incidents in Angola's long-running civil war.
