The PTI reported that the blast took place at the historic Ali Masjid (mosque) in the tribal Jamrud tehsil bordering Peshawar.

Earlier in January, a suicide bombing in Peshawar had killed 100 and injured around 200. The mosque was located in Peshawar's high-security Police Lines area and most of the victims were police personnel. At least a deputy superintendent of police (DSPs), five sub-inspectors (SIs), and the mosque's prayer leader Maulana Sahibzada Noorul Amin were among the dead. The terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had taken responsibility for the blast.
