Myanmar has been in the grips of violence since the military overthrew the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021 and assumed power. A resistance has emerged that's engaging with the military government and the two sides have frequently clashed. The government has used air attacks as well on the resistance fighters. Fighting has been fierce in southern Kayah, where members of an army-established ethnic Karenni militia recently defected en masse to the resistance side.
