MTV Video Music Awards since its first award show in 1984 has had a history of dramatic events or controversies. From the 2003 Britney/Madonna/Christina iconic on-stage kiss to Lady Gaga’s never-seen-or-done-before 2010 Meat Dress to the infamous rude interruption of Kanye West to Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech moment for Best Female Video in 2009. The list is endless.

2023 VMA Nominations making history

A few nomination categories are namely, Video of The Year, Song of The Year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Alternative, Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Video for Good, Push Performance of the Year, etc., What makes this year historical is female musicians are at the forefront of all the above-mentioned categories and more. Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, SZA, and Nicki Minaj are all nominated in the coveted MTV VMA categories.

Taylor Swift is the top-most nominated artist

Taylor Swift has 8 MTV VMA nominations this year namely, Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects for Anti Hero (2022). The Speak Now singer has also bagged the nomination for Artist of the Year. Other female musicians nominated in the same category this year are Beyoncé, Shakira, Doja Cat, Karol G., and Nicki Minaj. The 14-time VMA winner Taylor Swift may replace Madonna and Beyoncé as the female artist to win the most VMA awards. Swift’s The Eras Tour has already been breaking records and shattering the glass ceiling. While Beyoncé is also on her ninth concert tour, The Renaissance World Tour, Swift’s The Eras Tour is unbeatable with regard to sales and worldwide reach.

Performances by first-time nominees

MTV Video Music Awards has always been an event to look out for all music fans alike, no matter the music genre you follow and support. Among other performers, we will see Petras, Metro Boomin, and Boygenius gracing the stage. From the Best Afrobeats nominated category, Fletcher, Rema, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, and Davido will also perform live. While GloRilla, Ice Spice, Peso Pluma, Reneé Rapp, Kaliii, and PinkPantheress have all received double nominations for the best new artist.
