In a significant move to strengthen India’s clean energy transition, NTPC Limited has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UK-based Octopus Energy Group to explore collaboration across emerging segments of the power and energy ecosystem.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Jatinder Singh Chandok, Head of International Business Development at NTPC, and Chris Fitzgerald, Group Director of International Affairs at Octopus Energy during the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, underscoring the intent of both organisations to deepen global cooperation in next-generation energy solutions.
A Multi-Sector Clean Energy Push
The partnership aims to jointly explore opportunities across a wide spectrum of areas including:
Renewable energy development
Energy storage solutions
Electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure
Power distribution and retail supply
Digital energy platforms
This collaboration reflects a broader shift toward integrated, technology-driven energy systems that combine clean generation with smart consumption.
Strategic Importance
For NTPC, India’s largest power utility, the tie-up aligns with its ongoing transition from a predominantly thermal power producer to a diversified clean energy major. The company has been steadily expanding its footprint in renewables, green hydrogen, and new-age energy solutions.
Meanwhile, Octopus Energy brings global expertise in retail energy supply, smart grid technologies, and digital platforms—capabilities that could play a crucial role in modernising India’s energy distribution landscape.
A Non-Binding Yet Forward-Looking Pact
The MoU provides a non-binding framework for both companies to identify, assess, and potentially develop joint projects in India and select international markets.
While still at an exploratory stage, the partnership underscores the increasing convergence of global innovation and domestic scale in shaping the future of energy.
The Bigger Picture
As India accelerates its clean energy ambitions and targets net-zero emissions, such cross-border collaborations are expected to play a pivotal role. By combining NTPC’s scale with Octopus Energy’s technology-led approach, the partnership could unlock new models in sustainable power, mobility, and consumer-centric energy solutions.
