Government Announces Plans For State-Of-The-Art ‘Karnataka Mandapam’ To Elevate Tourism & Infrastructure

Bengaluru, 28 September 2026: In a major push to position Karnataka as a global destination for tourism, culture, and high-profile international events, Deputy Chief Minister Shri D.K. Shivakumar announced that the State Government is considering the construction of a state-of-the-art ‘Karnataka Mandapam’, modelled on New Delhi’s iconic Bharat Mandapam.

Speaking at the inauguration of the first Karnataka Tourism Awards held at Palace Grounds on World Tourism Day, Shri Shivakumar highlighted the state's vision to showcase its rich natural, cultural, and historical heritage to the world.

Key Highlights of the Announcement:

1. Karnataka Mandapam & World-Class Convention Infrastructure:

• Potential sites being explored for the proposed Karnataka Mandapam include Jakkur, the Mysuru Lamps premises, or the NGEF land, all linked via Metro connectivity.

• The State Government is also planning a dedicated convention centre in Bengaluru to host large-scale global cultural and entertainment events, including concerts by top international performers.

2. Coastal Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy-2026 Approved:

• To fully leverage the state’s 360 km coastline and scenic Western Ghats region, the Cabinet has approved the Coastal Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy-2026.

• Under this policy, tourism projects in the state will officially receive ‘Industry and Infrastructure’ status, enabling enhanced access to incentives and institutional support.

3. Ease of Doing Business for the Hospitality Sector:

• Pointing out that Bengaluru hosts over two lakh foreign passport holders, the Deputy Chief Minister announced a streamlined ease-of-doing-business mechanism ensuring hotel and hospitality project approvals within 2 to 3 months.

4. Sustainable Eco-Tourism & Policy Advocacy:

• The government will prioritise eco-tourism in Kodagu and the Malnad region, ensuring a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.

• The State Government will pursue support from the Union Government to streamline Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules on par with neighbouring coastal states like Goa and Kerala.

5. Signature Projects & Stakeholder Recognition:

• Asia’s Tallest Skydeck: The proposed flagship project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a finalised site.

• Drivers & Guides as Tourism Ambassadors: Tour guides and taxi drivers were recognised as official primary ambassadors of Karnataka’s tourism brand, with plans to support their role in delivering world-class visitor experiences.
