India At Asian Games 2023, Day 9: Silver And Bronze In Women's 3000m Steeplechase; Ancy Sojan Secures Long Jump Silver

India won seven medals on Monday at the ongoing 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. India started Day 9 with a bronze medal in the roller skate event then added three silver and three more bronze. As of October 2, India has won 60 medals, comprising 13 gold, 24 silver and 23 bronze. (Medal Tally | Schedule | Full Coverage | Sports News)

Then India's Vithya Ramraj ran a fantastic 400m hurdles race and equals PT Usha’s 39-year-old national record achieved at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Vithya clocks 55.42s to win her heat and qualify for the final. The Sutirtha-Ayhika pair also claimed bronze in the women's Table Tennis. India's Parul Chaudhary and Priti Lamba secured silver and bronze respectively in the 3000m steeplechase event. After that Ancy Sojan bags silver in the long jump event, and India's mixed 4x400m relay team claims silver to end the day to take the total number of medals in the tally to 60. Tejaswin Shankar places first in the 400m men’s decathlon event as he extends his lead by 250 points.

6:20 pm: India wins mixed 4x400m relay Silver!
India earned bronze in the 4x400m relay as Sri Lanka overtook India in the final few yards, with Bahrain finishing first. However, in the end, Sri Lanka was disqualified for lane infringement TR17.3.1. This led to Kazakhstan placing third.

6:15 pm: Ancy wins Silver!!
With a personal best of 6.63m, Ancy Sojan takes silver in the women's long jump. Shaili Singh placed sixth with a 6.48m jump.

6:06 pm: Women's Long Jump Final
Shaili's leap of 6.31m, compared to Ancy's jump of 6.30m, did not appear to be very good on the Indians' fourth try.

Shaili's fifth effort results in a 6.48m, keeping her in fifth position. Ancy improves on her personal best and prior tries to leap a magnificent 6.63m and maintain second place.

5:45 pm: Men's Decathlon
Tejaswin Shankar breezes through the high jump event and is now attempting the 2.09m to boost his points after easily jumping 1.97 and 2.03m.

He cleared 2.09 on his first attempt and is currently attempting 2.12 to secure his podium spot.

This event has concluded for the remaining six competitors, the highest of whom was Sun Qihao's 1.97m.

Tejaswin also jumps 2.12m. At the moment, it's a one-man show.

Tejaswin clears the 2.15m high jump in his second try.

Tejaswin's point lead over the other athletes grows as he clears 2.18m on his first try.

Tejaswin clears 2.21m on his first try to cross 1000 points and equal his season-best.

5:32 pm: Men's 200m final
Amlan Borgohain of India finished sixth in the men's 200m final with a time of 20.98, while Japan's Koki Ueyama won gold.

5:26 pm: Women's Long Jump Final
Ancy Sojan's third leap of 6.56m ties her personal best, propelling her over Chinese Taipei's Nga Yan into second place. Shaili Singh, on the other hand, leaped 6.15m to get fourth.

5:20 pm: Women’s Pole Vault Final
Pavithra Vengatesh fails to make it over the 4m mark for the third time. Pavithra is now fourth, with the two Chinese competitors Niu Chunge and LI Ling remaining to compete.

Pavithra Vengatesh fails to clear 4.10m on both occasions. She will only be allowed one more chance to go over the same material.

Shaili Singh clears 6.34m, while Ancy Sojan clears 6.49m.

5:05 pm: Silver and Bronze medal alert!
Silver goes to Parul Chaudhary, but bronze goes to Priti Lamba, who beat out Bahraini Tigest Getent.

The Indians and Bahrainians are the first four athletes in the women's 3000m steeplechase final. Parul is in second position.

India's star squash player Joshna Chinappa has been knocked out of the singles competition. Lower-ranked Heo Mingyeong of South Korea beats Joshna in the pre-quarterfinals to dash India's medal hopes in the category.

India lose 18-21, 15-21 to the Philippines in their Men’s Quadrant Preliminary Group B match.

Indian archers continue to do well in their opening-round fixtures. They have won all four of their compound men’s and women’s 1/16 elimination matches. India's mixed doubles pair of Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh has won its Pool D match against Thailand in straight games 11-5, 11-6.

The good show continues in archery with both the men's and women's teams making the last-eight stage. The Indian women beat Thailand 5-1 and the men beat Hong Kong 6-0 to enter the quarter-finals.

Tejaswin Shankar comes up with a season-best effort of 13.39m and is placed fifth in the overall standings.

And the men's team follows up the women's team's podium finish with one of their own. The quartet of Aryanpal Ghuman, Anandkumar Velkumar, Siddhant Kamble, and Vikrant Ingale come up with a time of 4:10.128s to win the men's 3000m speed skating relay race bronze medal.

India bags its first medal of the day, and its first medal in roller skating in this edition of the Asiad. The team of Sanjana Bathula, Karthika Jagadeeswaran, Heeral Sadhu, and Kasturi Raj Aarathy brings home the bronze medal in the women's speed skating 3000m relay race. They clock 4:34.861s to finish behind Chinese Tapei and South Korea.

7:07am: Decathlon - Time For Long Jump
Tejaswin Shankar now in action in the long jump section of the decathlon event. Gets 7.37m on the first go, and is top of the pile for now.

6:55am: Archery - India Start With Wins
India have started their recurve and compound mixed team campaigns with wins. In recurve, Ankita Bhakat and Atanu Das combine to give India a 6-2 win over Malaysia in the 1/8 elimination. In the compound mixed team (Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale), India beat UAE 159-151 in the 1/8 elimination.

India's Tejaswin Shankar comes up with a new personal best in the 100m section of the decathlon event, clocking 11.12s and finishing fourth. He has secured 834 points in the race.
