Bundles of traditional kite flying thread, locally known as 'dor' or 'manjha', is readied ahead of Makar Sankranti festival, in Amritsar. Locals prepare traditional kite-flying strings using crushed glass, glue, colours and egg. In recent years however, Chinese threads entered the Indian market affecting sales of the locally prepared threads. The durable and cheaper Chinese thread continue to be available; despite a country-wide ban on them for kite flying was imposed last year following incidents of death caused by them.
