The Congress emerged as the single-largest party in Meghalaya by winning 22 seats while Sangma’s NCP was a distant second with only 14 mlas.

A Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government under D.D. Lapang, a veteran politician, has taken over in Shillong. As of now, the coalition looks stable with 42 mlas supporting it. But given the state’s record of frequent toppling of regimes, nothing is impossible.

For now, Sangma hasn’t been able to do much, except that the ncp has won all the 12 seats (falling under his Tura Lok Sabha constituency) in the Garo Hills region. The iggest surprise has been the bjp’s electoral debut in Nagaland, courtesy tacit NSCN(I-M) support for the Democractic Alliance of Nagaland, the anti-S.C. Jamir front of which the BJP is a part. Not only has the party won seven seats in a 60-member house of a predominantly Christian state, the alliance is all set to form the government.

The Left Front (LF), meanwhile, has just about held off the tribal challenge in Tripura. The banned National Liberation Front of Tripura had hoped to propel the Congress-Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura alliance to power. But the LF successfully played on the fears of the Bengalis in the state to emerge victorious.
