The UP government is in a bit of a quandary over a pil filed by a lawyer, P.K. Jaiswal, demanding the removal of all statues at road crossings in Lucknow. The Allahabad High Court has directed the district magistrate to file a representation within 15 days. The pil says the statues are violating traffic and road rules and obstruct clear vision. They also cause a heavy burden on the state exchequer. The administration is worried. If the court allows Jaiswal’s petition, what will happen to Mayawati’s obsession with statues, they wonder.
