The National Centre for Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) is leading a transformative path in India’s sports environment. With a mission to provide world-class support to athletes, the centre is committed to innovation and excellence in sports science and research.

The formation of the NCSSR under the Sports Authority of India was a key step towards improving the performance of Indian athletes. With a current budget outlay of ₹260 crores, the centre operates on a hub-and-spoke model, to provide comprehensive sports science support across the country. Eleven regional centres, alongside two high-performance centres in Bangalore and Patiala, are dedicated to delivering top-notch services.

“We are always athlete-centric. Our focus is on providing the best possible support to our athletes, backed by evidence-based practices,” emphasized Brig. (Dr.) Bibhu Kalyan Nayak, Director in-charge of NCSSR. The centre’s mission is clear—athletes’ needs and challenges are at the core of every decision, ensuring they receive the finest sports science and sports medicine facilities.

To further this vision, the NCSSR collaborates with top universities and medical colleges across India, to provide specialized programs in sports sciences and sports medicine. This collaboration is essential in building a robust ecosystem of sports science experts who are well-equipped to address the needs of athletes.

The NCSSR’s commitment to innovation is seen in its approach to research and technology. “We have started using AI to develop performance prediction models and injury prevention systems,” Brig. Nayak said. This forward-thinking approach assures that India’s athletes not only perform to their full potential but also do so with reduced risk of injury.

In its quest to support elite athletes, the NCSSR has brought together a team of highly trained professionals in various disciplines, including sports psychology, nutrition, and biomechanics. These experts work relentlessly to improve athletes’ training, recovery, and overall performance, providing them with the skills they need to excel on the global scale.

As Brig. Nayak aptly put it, “We are on a journey to help our athletes attain their genetic potential with the best sports science support. With continued innovation and collaboration, we are confident about India’s bright sporting future.”
