Though corporatisation in recent years has had some impact, the Indian film industry remains an overwhelmingly black economy. When the source of funds itself is black—underworld or slush money—how can payments be in white? Cheque payments are for mere token amounts. Stashing problems are resolved by taking the hawala route and turning rupees into dollars, or by buying gold. Film people have traditionally headed the IT department's raid lists. Stars recently raided include Shah Rukh Khan, Karishma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit.
