On a huge dining table sits the villain Mahesh Manjrekar, with gold plate and katori in front, waiting to be served. One of his poor minions comes with a huge pot: “Biwi ka mangalsutra girvi rakh ke ye mutton biriyani laya hoon.” You can’t help but laugh at this attempt at sending up the cinema of the ’80s. Alas, Sajid Khan doesn’t carry on consistently with the tongue-in-cheek tone. He takes seriously the loudness, kitsch, the Hindu-Muslim tokenisms and the melodrama that he started off by spoofing. Eventually, the film feels utterly stale, gets boring and turgid, and leaves you cringing with lines like: “Jab ladki achaar khaye to samajh lo kisi ne uski ticket kaat li”. Not worth buying a ticket; wait for it to come to a TV screen near you.
