Kiss

Wednesday, November 5, 2008
Uma Bharati has always been known to be sharp-tongued. But this time the Bhartiya Janshakti Party chief's actions spoke louder than her words. She lost it and publicly slapped her party's Madhya Pradesh state unit vice-president Anil Rai in full pubic view at Chhindwara. Not only he but more than 1,000 party workers quit BJ's primary membership denouncing her behaviour. Umaji realised that she needed to do some damage control. So she decided to kiss and make up and said she had the right to hit him as he was like a younger brother or a son. She had recently been in news when she had promised to give a party ticket to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, arrested in connection with the Malegaon blasts.

The nuisance of misuse of PILs was demonstrated once again when one more busybody in Jaipur filed a case against the infamous kiss between Hollywood star Richard Gere and actress Shilpa Shetty A Jaipur court, describing their public act as "highly sexually erotic", issued arrest warrants against Gere and summoned Shilpa for appearance on May 5. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Dinesh Gupta issued the order on a PIL filed by local resident Poonam Chand Bhandari, who complained that their public kiss during an anti-AIDS awareness programme in Delhi was an "indecent representation" of sexual activities in a public place. Gupta, who earlier viewed television footage of the event, observed that the two film personalities had "transgressed all limits of vulgarity and have the tendency to corrupt society" and added that Shilpa's attitude was "cooperative" and she never restrained herself but kept inviting Gere for the kissing episode. Shilpa has also been directed not to leave the country without the permission of the court. Richard Gere, who can be sent to jail for up to three months or fined or both for the crime if he is arrested, has now offered to apologise if he has "offended" anyone. Well, we are like this only and the public will have to perhaps wait till a higher court finally dismisses this absurd Jaipur order.

That a peck on the cheek can certainly degenerate into a molestation and assault was brought home in the strange case of the "liplock" between "item girl" Rakhi Sawant - recently in the news for being booked for obscenity over a stage show in Kolhapur - and Punjabi "pop singer" Mika Singh - better known as the brother of Daler Mehendi. In her complaint lodged at the Oshiwara police station in Mumbai, Rakhi Sawant stated that Mika "grabbed and kissed her" on the dance floor and got his bodyguard to rough up a friend when she objected to his behaviour. Though Rakhi and Mika were first seen being "friendly" at Mika's birthday party, exchanging kisses on cheeks, and smearing cake on each other, the "inappropriate" kiss surprised Rakhi. As the kiss-contoversey bacame the headlines of news channels, Rakhi told reporters that "Mika took advantage of our friendship and misbehaved with me. He bit my lips twice and in the process my earring broke... I am an Indian woman. I will not allow a liplock - a peck on the cheek is okay." Police have registered a case of molestation and assault against Singh and his bodyguard, who was identified as "Tiger", on the basis of Rakhi's complaint but no arrests have been made.

Musician Gwen Stefani gets a kiss on her pregnant belly from U2 lead singer Bono after she presented the band with the best rock album award for 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. U2 have won five prizes at the most prestigious US music awards, the Grammys, eclipsing pre-ceremony favourites Mariah Carey and Kanye West. The Irish band won every award they were nominated for, including song of the year and album of the year. Pop diva Carey, rap star West and R&B newcomer John Legend topped the nominations with eight each - and picked up three awards apiece. U2's haul takes their Grammy total to 21 awards - including eight in the last two years alone. However, the three Indians -- music legend Asha Bhonsle, Anoushka Shankar and Lama Tashi, a Buddhist monk and Tibetan scholar from Arunachal Pradesh -- who won the nominations failed to grab any of the awards.
