The Lok Sabha elections draw near, so does the biopic of the country’s prime minister. Perfectly timed its release might be, but PM Narendra Modi has earned the ire of lyricist Javed Akhtar—he was wrongly credited for work in a project he wasn’t involved in. Then there’s scepticism about how good a likeness is a shapely Vivek Oberoi for our most prominent politician. Ah, but just go in for the old-fashioned songs: Ye desh nahin mitne dunga, sings a patriotic Modi in the film.

With the audience chewing busily on The Accidental Prime Minister and Thackeray, the most topical of them biopics dropped like a bunkerbuster: PM Narendra Modi, with Vivek Oberoi in the lead role. Expect a rousing hagiography, but we commend the make-up artist.

A picture you seem to have missed: Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi in earnest conversation with former PM Manmohan Singh. Ah, no wonder you’ve never seen this, for Anupam Kher (Singh), Arjun Mathur (Rahul) and Aahana Kumra (Priyanka) promise to be master impersonators of personages much in news. They might as well be, for they’ll be judged and scrutinised!

To be clear, the actor is the one on the right. Kranti Prakash Jha will play Baba Ramdev in an 85-episode biographical series Swami Ramdev: Ek Sangharsh. Ramdev claims to have shared all his life’s truths and was prepared to face any resulting sangharsh (struggle). The writers have worked very hard to get it right—their own Bhagirath prayas, perhaps.
