What is even more astounding is the blatant, guileless and crude effort by the White House to divert domestic attention by zapping Iraq. I understand that the President’s rating is at an all-time high with 70 per cent local support for Tomahawk and Cruise hits on Saddam Hussein. Is it possible that Americans, taking a cue from Hollywood and Arnold Schwarzenegger, are beguiled by a war in which few humans are involved and one which merely demands long-distance pressing of multi-coloured buttons? Whatever the reason, the‘innocent’ Americans demonstrated in 1998 that when their supreme leader is in trouble, no part of the world is safe.
