Realigning Popular Support

The survey didn’t surprise Palestinians, groaning as they have been under the rampant corruption and maladministration of the PA. There’s also anger against Arafat for his failure to mount a stronger resistance to the recent Israeli invasion. Yet Arafat should win largely because of the disunity among the Opposition, and also because the Islamists (read Hamas) don’t contest elections. In an attempt to woo the electorate, Arafat has promised to reorganise the PA in the next 10 days. Hopefully, for the benefit of the poor.
